The music business is shifting tectonically, but different plates are moving at different rates, as a summary by the New Yorker shows:
"The top 10 artists played on radio were 7 country acts, two hard-rock bands, and a pop star named Justin Timberlake. The top 10 streamed videos were largely for songs by young women who sing R. & B. Eight of the top 10 ringtones were hip-hop.... The biggest-selling album of the year was Josh Groban’s Noël, which sold 3.7 million copies despite being released in October."Bite-size digital is more hip-hop. Radio is more country. CD albums are more diverse but top-heavy with mainstream and pop: Josh Groban (3.7M), High School Musical, The Eagles, Alicia Keyes, Daughtry, Hannah Montana, Linkin Park, Fergie, Taylor Swift and Kanye West (1.9M). Culture, geography, economics and technology are interacting and showing up in Nielsen's 2007 summary, as reported on BusinessWire.
